What we need to price it

Four things. Everything else is optional and only sharpens the price.

Photo of the whole converter

Required

Shape, size and stamps tell us which unit it is. No photo, no price — we don't guess.

Vehicle make

Required

Pick it from the list. Don't know it? Tick "I don't know the make" or send a photo of the badge or VIN plate — either one still gets you a price.

Your ZIP code

Required

We use it to set up shipping to the SMASH US receiving point. Shipping is covered by SMASH when the lot fits one box up to 24 × 18 × 16 in and 55 lb.

Mobile and email

Required

The offer goes out by text and email. We don't cold-call.

Serial or part number

Sharper price

The stamp maps to an exact model. A close-up photo of it is as good as typing it.

Count and condition

Helpful

How many, and whether intact, cut or decanned. Condition doesn't lower the price; content does.

02 — Why SMASH

Why sell to SMASH

State scrap-metal rules apply: we may ask for government ID before payment, and every lot is inspected against your photos.

03 — Questions

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about selling catalytic converters to SMASH in the United States.

What do you need to price my catalytic converter?

A clear photo of the whole converter, the make of the vehicle it came from (or tick "I don't know the make", or send a photo of the badge or VIN plate), and your ZIP code. A photo of the serial or part number stamp gets you a sharper price. We also need a phone number and email so we can send the offer.

How is the price worked out?

From the converter's platinum, palladium and rhodium content and today's metal prices. The offer is one all-in number: what we quote is what lands in your account.

How does shipping work?

Shipping to the SMASH US receiving point is covered by SMASH when your converters fit in one box up to 24 × 18 × 16 in and 55 lb (roughly one to ten converters). Bigger or heavier lots: we arrange it with you before you accept. Your ZIP code is what we use to set it up.

When and how do I get paid?

By PayPal, Zelle, Venmo, cheque or wire — in US dollars after your converters arrive and pass inspection, normally within one to two business days of receipt. Government ID may be required before payment where state law requires it.

Do you buy cut, damaged or decanned converters?

Yes. Intact, cut, damaged or decanned honeycomb are all priced on their precious metal content, not the shell.

Is there a minimum quantity?

No. One converter or a pallet. Anything beyond one box we arrange with you.

04 — The metals

What makes a scrap cat worth money

The shell is steel. The money is in a few grams of platinum-group metals on the honeycomb inside.

The metals

Every converter carries a ceramic or metal honeycomb coated with platinum, palladium and often rhodium. How much of each depends on the maker, the engine and the emissions standard it was built for — which is why the same-looking shell can be worth very different amounts.

OEM versus aftermarket

Original-equipment converters are loaded to pass the factory test and usually carry the most metal. Aftermarket replacements are built to a minimum and vary widely; some are worth very little. The vehicle make — or the badge photo — tells us which side of that line you are on.

Why the serial stamp helps

The stamped number maps to a specific model with a known loading, so we can price it without cutting it open. A readable photo of the stamp does the same job as typing it.

Why prices move

Platinum-group metals trade every day. A converter worth $150 this week can be $130 or $170 next week. That is why we price on the day and tell you how long the offer stands.
